Sorry for the rant but does anyone else think is it useless to say that a drive time between two places is "less than X"? For example, in the afternoon they will say "drive time between uptown and 485 is now less than 35 minutes"

Is it 12 minutes? 20 minutes? 33 minutes? All of which are less than 35 minutes. It would be far better to give us an average drive time or even a "more than" drive time to help plan our commutes.

/rant

Traffic reports on the radio are useless and not given often enough to be of any value. It's easier to pull up Google Maps to look at the real time traffic info or use the Waze App if you have alternate routes to get to the same destination.

What I don't understand is why traffic updates are posted on the Charlotte Observer website. Who would benefit from an article saying "No traffic issues right now other than the usual congested areas....."?

I generally figure that "... less than 35 minutes" means something close to that figure.

The only time I find traffic reports useful is when there is a really big problem. Even then, they get it wrong half the time. Once I heard on the radio that there was a fire near Monroe and Idlewild but it was really on the other side of Independence. That makes a big difference!

They used to have Skyview traffic with a reporter in the air that was very accurate and informative. But that was a number of years ago when they had Jeff Pilot doing the traffic.

I agree. When there is a big problem on a particular road like all lanes closed or a major accident. Otherwise, I can't tell you how many times they say the "the usual merging delays on 485 from I-77 to Johnson Road" and the traffic is either lighter than normal or much heavier than normal. I think in the absence of major issues, they just trot out these stock phrases.

No matter how it's reported, someone won't like it.

Wouldn't a "more than" time cause you the same grief as a "less than" time? Is it 40? is it 50? Should I just stop at the mistresses house first and not go home until its over?

Yes it would. That is why they should give an "average" drive time.
