Where did he buy the machine from? If it was from a local sewing machine or fabric shop they usually offer a few basic lessons. If he bought it online or from a big box store check to see if there are any dealers in the area for your brand and if you could do lessons there (though you will have to pay if your machine was bought elsewhere). That is ideal because they will be familiar with your machine and will show you how to use its features specifically.

Otherwise, most fabric stores have basic classes. Some community colleges offer sewing classes as well, those will probably go a little bit further beyond the very basics.

This^^^

Two good friends own sewing machine stores in Charlotte, and this is exactly what they do. Free lessons and service if you buy from them, paid lessons if you didn't.

Ruth's Sewing Room
Ruth teaches at several locations. Excellent teacher, and a nice lady. I took from her a couple of years ago. Highly recommended!!

Go to Mary Jo's & wander around. There are business cards from people who do sewing & who teach sewing. If you don't see what you want just ask employees. They are very helpful.

Mary Jo's in Gastonia is now offering sewing classes. Go to their website www.maryjos.com and click on their class schedule or give them a call. I already took one class and loved it.
