I have a friend that lives in Monroe and I love in the NW side but we both have roots on the NW side. We tend to meet for lunch a couple of times per month. We've got a few places picked but I'm wondering which one off places you like in those areas. No chains.

I'm thinking something close to 485 and closer to Charlotte than Matthews. Like say between The Centrum and Rae road.

If you are talking hwy 51 between Pineville and Matthew and you like casual, there's Riccios Italian/pizzeria near elm and 51. The rest I know are all chains.

That's what I'm afraid of. I was hoping a different Mexican place besides Don Pedros. I can think of several oriental places and my stylist (who is Japanese) recommends one in McMullen Creek. I never know what to order though.

Mexican or the Japanese place Kabuto's near McMullen?

As for Mexican, there's a On the Border on McKee and providence...just kidding! I don't eat out at Mexican restaurants so no suggestions I can think of.

Zapata's. Slightly out of your way but I've had good food every time I've been.

I think she meant Musashi's because she mentioned it being new Goodwill. Reviews look iffy. Anyone been there?

We went to Viet Thai yesterday which was good.

Thanks. That's fine as is Stonecrest. We do Firebirds once or twice per year for the prime rib (typing that just made me hungry). I don't like going more often because I want it to not become familiar. That's more of a chain anyway but it is on our list.

I went there for the Viet part. First time having Pho. For Thai there's a place near Fresh Market down the street.

It's funny when I find a particular thing I like I get pretty loyal to the place and don't search for alternates. I'm not talking who's got the best sesame chicken, I'm not that picky.

But NY pizza, pud Thai, and now Pho are dialed in semi-permanently.

The other thing about reviews (though this doesn't count for anywhere I currently go to) is the more ethnic they seem to be the less the expats from that country seem to care about the things us native borns care about. In other words authentic to them is judging against what they knew from their home country and not our expectations.

Tony Bourdain sums it up with "a little bit of dirt isn't going to kill you".
