There have been numerous articles and reports on the most and least gay friendly cities in the US. One of the was the HRC. They rated Charlotte 39/100. Columbia actually is ahead of Charlotte by one point which sort of surprised me. I am sure NC passing of Amendment One didn't help Charlotte. I am more curious in other people's opinions though. As a lot of you have lived in other cities. Where would you rate Charlotte in terms of being gay friendly? By the way, I am a gay male myself, I think the 39/100 was a little low. Opinions?

Most of the threads seemed to be outdated. I realize 4-6 years isn't a lot, but Charlotte has changed a lot since then.

It's very very gay friendly.

I couldn't imagine a place being any gay friendlier. I say that as a gay man. The only people who have a problem - like any person of any group - are those who want their to be a problem.

I'd say 100/100

They are friendly but I don't necessarily see full support of them. I saw this especially with chik fil a incidents. But that's my personal opinion as to why that number is low. I wish that number was 100/100!

The closer to town, the friendlier the community.

And I say the urban east side is very gay friendly.

There are gay night clubs in rural downtown cities in NC. It can't be statistically worse than most states. I've known plenty of gays too who didn't hide it even remotely, and this was in the country side..

Charlotte is a politically moderate city. Considering that it is still largely a church-going population and the fact that this is (technically) a Southern city, the climate is perhaps surprisingly gay friendly. Someone coming from major metros like DC or SF or NYC would likely find the LGBTQ scene lacking, but for a city of Charlotte's type and size, it does have a fairly visible gay community. My guess is that the low HRC score is due at least in part to Amendment 1, and Mecklenburg (Charlotte's county) was one of the few areas that voted against that passage.

We aren't SF or ATL but it's friendly enough IMO. I haven't seen or heard of any injustices due to being gay in Charlotte.

The scene for them could probably be better but they darn sure aren't hiding and seem pretty comfortable to me when I go Uptown.

I also think gays would probably fair better if they stopped asking the same questions.
