American International Group will open its new Charlotte technology center at the BB&T Center in uptown this summer.
The insurance company announced last December it would open the software-development center and create 230 jobs with an average annual salary of about $100,000.
That's great that another company is moving into uptown. We need it there.
But my question is where do these companies continue to claim such high salaries as an average? Charlotte average salary is just under $62k and the entire state of NC is around $47k.
I have interviewed at several of the companies who are claiming to have these salaries, only to have the salary discussion turn to the $35k range. Metlife, Chiquita, etc.
Also, depends if you're a contractor vs employee. I work at a bank here in Richmond, VA with a HIGH contractor ratio....as one, I got 100K, then knocked down to 74K when converted to perm. I don't know if that AIG location is going to be contractor-heavy. Tech usually is.
It is an AVERAGE. This means that they have people getting payed 30k and others receiving 170k. Making it an average. You can have 4 people getting payed 50k a year and two with 200k salaries and you get a 100k average. In the case for programmers and developers I'm surprised the average isn't higher. The starting salary for most programmers out of college is 70k with a senior developer getting payed up to 160k. You have to be careful when looking at the average salaries when applying for jobs.
