Belk Foundation is giving Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools $500,000 to expand a program that lets teachers earn up to $23,000 a year more by taking on additional duties.

The program is designed to keep good teachers in the classroom by offering big raises in exchange for working with other teachers and more students.

The program started with four schools this year. The additional money will allow the program to expand to 17 more schools next year.

Since 1928 the foundation in the past has given numerous scholarships and grants to colleges particularly UNC- Charlotte.

In January 2010, the Board of Directors of The Belk Foundation adopted a new mission statement that placed a stronger focus on giving to support schools and educational programs and initiatives.
Interested in increasing the impact of its charitable investments, the Foundation is focused currently on investing in programs that increase quality teaching and leading in K-12 public schools and increase the number of children in grades K-3 who achieve on or above grade level in core subjects.
