The recommendation was for Clover High School, not necessarily the town of Clover. The high school covers from Clover to Lake Wylie (Buster Boyd Bridge). Lake Wylie (the town) provides an excellent commute to the airport (15 - 20 minutes) and a wide range of housing. It is definitely worth a visit.
I live in Clover and commute 5 times a week to uptown Charlotte - and while it's not terrible, I am getting tired of the drive. I easily put over 300 miles a week in my car. I do agree...there are a lot of horses and land around here...definitely a big change from NYC and I still get asked everyday how a girl from the Bronx ended up in Clover! One thing I definitely cannot complain about my commute - is traffic! I hit very little traffic driving through Gastonia into Charlotte throught I-85 - compared to bumber to bumber on 485/77/Tryon. I wouldn't think the commute would be too bad to the airport from Clover though...it takes me less than 30 mins to get to the airport from my house.
It's 26 miles if you take 321 to 74 (or 85). How on earth is that possible at 8AM traffic in 30 minutes? Or were you suggesting non commuting hours? Now you could take 49 to 160 and come in the back way, but your still gonna hit a lot of traffic. Especially when they finish the outlet mall.
The airport is 12 miles from Belmont. 16 from Cramerton. Straight up 74 with not much traffic outside of Friday afternoons.

According to Google maps, the distance from my house (in Lake Wylie, SC) is less than 16 miles and a travel time of 25 minutes. We go from 49 to Shopton Rd ( no stop lights from 49 to 160 ) and have made the trip in under 25 minutes.
If you move to Mecklenburg country and are interested in Northwest School of the Arts, they sometimes have openings in the summer. I would give them a call about audition schedules. (My daughter did not apply until May and auditioned in August for 10th grade). It's a 6-12 school and a great atmosphere with passionate students.

I am 20 miles from the airport. Even though I am in Clover, I am literally 2 minutes from the NC (Gaston Co.) border. I drive through Gastonia to get to the airport and I can either jump on 85 or take Wilkinson. Getting to the highway is what takes the longest - once I get on 85 - it literally takes me about 10 mins to get to the airport.
Not trying to ague with anyone. Just saying it's sorta bad advise for someone looking for a "anywhere within a decent commute to the airport" to live in Clover SC. hehe
