So besides Myrtle and Pigeon Forge any other good places to drive a max of 5 hrs for a 5 day family vacation? (12 yr old boy) Was planning on going to the mountains this year as we have been to the beach the past few but thought I would see what others say could be an option. Thanks!

Huge sections of the coast are within 5 hours, not just myrtle!

Same for the mountains.

I know as a 12 year old boy I would rather spend two weeks at the beach rather than 2 days at one spot in the mountains, lol.

Well, 5 hours would include areas of Virginia, TN, Georgia, SC . . . it just depends what you are looking for.

You referenced Myrtle Beach and Pigeon Forge, which indicates you are looking for built-in entertainment. Six Flags over Georgia? Take in the Aquarium in Atlanta? Then head back to the mountains of Georgia/NC/SC?

Horseback riding? Historic town? Appalachian Trail?

Amelia Island, FL. We made it in just under 5 hours, spent last Labor Day there. Great underrated place.

Alpine Helen in GA? Helen, Georgia | Helen - White County Convention & Visitors Bureau You could stage a daytrip to the Chickamauga battlefield from there.

I'd also agree on Williamsburg.

5-6 hours to Washington DC
4 hours to Atlanta
You could also do 2-3 days in Atlanta and 2-3 days in the Mountains from there
8 hours to Disney :-)
Beaches

From here it's about 7 hours to DC. Made the trip to many times to count.

OP- I was going to suggest Charleston.

How about White Water Rafting in Western NC or Eastern Tennessee?

Edit: Savannah is around a 4 hour drive from Charlotte.
