you should head up 77 by exit 18 I sometimes get a whiff of a sweet almost like baby powder smell and it doesnt matter if the car windows are rolled up it still gets in the car.
I have been smelling it since I have lived on the North Side for more than five years and have yet to determine the source.
I have narrowed it down to be a buisness off Reames Rd but I cannot figure out which one. I have asked the people who work at the nearby truck stop and they just think Im crazy lol.
Sunny it is a large uniform cleaning plant right before exit 18 heading north. I have smelled it also and that is the only sign I see that makes sense. Or maybe someone is baking a lot of cookies
I also smell that every morning on the way to work...has anyone found out what it is? I thought perhaps it was the Cracker Barrel on Carowinds Blvd but I don't smell it once I get off the exit and pass Cracker Barrel.
I live a few miles from that area, and after smelling this awful, grease-pit type of smell off and on, I finally found the answer. There is a Frito-Lay plant in that area. It comes and goes, it hasn't been too frequent in the past couple of months, but earlier this year, it was happening almost every other evening...and it was bad. I have a feeling they were going through some major cleanout cycle at that time, because it reminds me of the smell of cleaning out the grease traps in restaurants.
Every so often the smell will return, but it hasn't been nearly as pungent or as frequent as it was a few months ago.
I usually smell an acrid odor, similar to burning wires, when driving on 77 around exit 4 or 5. I would always think something was burning in my car.
When I lived in the Bronx as a teenager, we lived 3 blocks from the Cafe Bustello plant. When they were roasting the beans, it would smell like fresh-brewed coffee in our neighborhood. Then, I got married & moved not to far from the Stella D'oro plant. Every Thurs., when they would clean out the ovens, it smelled like fresh-baked cookies. YUM!
I always smell that smell near exit 1 on 77. It smells just like a paper mill.
