I've found 2 pretty good video poker places in Monroe, NC and found a bingo in Pageland, SC with some nice poker machines I like to play a little video poker every now and then but a lot of people tell me it's illegal in NC and SC If video poker is illegal then how do these places pay off without getting in trouble? I've seen police around those places but they've never indicated there was any problem. Is it really illegal? I'd rather not ask a police officer or anyone else around there, I was hoping someone on here would know.

In NC: All the machines — except those at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino — are now outlawed. SC banned video poker in 2000, but state law enforcement officials still seize 100 machines a year.
In NC, business owners were once allowed to have three machines per store. Players legally could win up to $10 in merchandise. Cash payouts were illegal.
The law stepped businesses down to two and then one in 90-day intervals before making the machines completely illegal.
Wow, I've been going to these places for a while now and I have even seen the Monroe Police working as security. I wonder why the police haven't done anything to stop them if all those machines are illegal. I'm glad I didn't buy a home in Union County, these places have been in business for months and none of the police officers that play the machines or work security for the places have ever said anything about it being illegal. I wondered why Monroe has so many poker machines but Charlotte has none, I figured local laws were different but I guess Monroe is just getting a cut on the "taxes" we are forced to pay on everything we win from the machines.

They were still in operation after June 30th of this year?
I stopped by two video poker places just last weekend in Monroe, most are open 7 days a week. They always have large crowds at the two I like going to. There are a couple others throughout Union County but I don't care for them, they are much smaller. I don't think I'll be going back now that I know it is illegal, I don't want to be around criminals and crooked police.
There are many of these machines throughout Union and Mecklenburg county. There are tricks owners can play that allow them to possess the tables but pay people under the table. You usually have to build trust with the owners before you can be considered winners beyond the recreational affect, i.e. "the payout." I've known an owner who has gone to jail for 30 days, but didn't bat an eye to reopen his machines. They'll always be a way to bend the rules.
