Were they not trying to create a studio, perhaps for movies, etc. in the old Eastland Mall area? If so, what happened to that? If Charlotte is a relatively clean and nice-looking city, why not?

There's a thread running on the state board on the topic of the legislature killing film incentives.
Bert Hesse, the guy who was pushing Studio Charlotte, wanted the property for nothing, and couldn't show a feasible plan as to how he would have funded his studio. That, plus the threat of the film incentives expiring, convinced city council to deny his request to purchase the parcel.
