I've read through prior threads, although most of them were a few years old. I'm looking into Behavior Training for my two rescue dogs (about 2 years old). Essentially, I'd like them to get to the point where they can roam the house while we're gone, without having to worry about them climbing on the counter or chewing up anything that we didn't put away. Most of their problem seems to stem from Separation Anxiety, which is common for rescue dogs.

I wrote to a few different trainers, and heard back from three of them. The first is Karen Guignard at Bark Busters. In older threads, people said they did not recommend Bark Busters due to their methods (throwing stuff at the dogs, etc), although Karen's website and email made it seem like that's not the case at all. Has anyone had experience with Karen specifically, rather than a different Bark Busters trainer? In-Home training was about $500-800.

Another was Ruth Wenzel at A Dogs Best Friend Training. That would be about $500 for private training, although it would be at her facility instead of my home. It's another few hundred for In-Home training.

The last was Doris Anderson at K9 BootCamp, although she didn't provide a quote when I asked.

Has anybody tried these, or recommend a comparably priced trainer? I saw people mention Dogs by Andy on another thread although that was a few thousand bucks, and that's not an option for me.

I just noticed a groupon for 'A Bark Above The Rest' In-Home training, so if anybody has used them then I'd be interested in hearing about that too!

Try the Dog Wizard! They are working wonders with my two dogs and have a great reputation.

I used Dogs by Andy, but you generally get what you pay for. My dog is off leash trained and knows several commands now. He is awesome!

I definitely think a trainer is a great idea, but is there a reason you don't want to crate them so they aren't roaming and anxious around the house? Crates are a source of security and comfort for dogs when they're used appropriately. It's their den, and a retreat.

My dog slept in his crate for years beyond his puppy days (with the door open) day and night by choice. When he was a puppy and we needed to crate him when we were going out during the day, I'd often give him a Kong filled with peanut butter and some kibble mixed in and kept in the freezer and that would keep him entertained for a bit. He'd work away on that then pass out and be contentedly snoozing when we got home!
