My Girl friend is relocating to Matthews in about 5 months she will be pursuing a career in Elementary edu. She will be licensed in NY and NC. We are unsure if you need a Masters Degree to continue teaching in NC. Here in NY they require you to complete your Masters before 5 years from the day you start teaching. Is it the same in NC (Charlotte)?

I think that the schools here value National Board Certification more- they pay for it and you get the same salary increase as a Master's.

NC's only requirement is that you put in so many hours within a five year span. And, with all the workshops and required things, you typically have enough renewal credits with out even trying! You do get paid more for a masters or for being board certified.

Actually, you pay for it and don't get reimbursed until you pass the National Boards, which could be a couple of years later. I don't think they value it OVER an MA, but it is something nice to get. The biggest problem is that whatever you get your boards in, that is what you have to work in forever to keep getting the extra money per year. So, if you teach elem. and later get an MA to do special ed or counseling or administration, your boards no longer matter.

Way more than the original poster needed to know, but just info.

I don't know about CMS, but Union County will reimburse up to $500 per year in tuition for continuing education, so she could use that toward an MA if she wanted, but it isn't necessary.
