Are there any general differences between the two such as cost of living, real estate values, quality of life, restrictions, recreational activitives (boat rentals, restaurants etc.) cost of building a new home, HOA's etc.

General differences to me are that Lake Wylie is A LOT less crowded, Lake Wylie only has one or two places to pull up your boot and go eat inside, and they have the big national Bass fishing tournement there which apparently draws lots of fisherman and fans from all over the country. Lake Norman is the "party" lake - which is fine if that's what you are looking for
