Lowe's Foods seems to be remaining in the suburbs surrounding Charlotte. Their newer stores are nice, although I am mostly accustomed to Harris Teeter and Publix.

Updating long awaited news ...
Joe Bruno reported on WSOC last night that Wegmans may finally be preparing to enter the Charlotte market. A rezoning request is now underway for a new shopping center in south Charlotte that will include a 100,000 square foot supermarket. So unless they're planning a super Harris Teeter, then speculation appears to point towards Wegmans, who normally develop such a large size store. And it seems a strong possibility that Wegmans may choose to expand from Raleigh and the Triangle region and make their way down to Charlotte. I believe this site in question may have been a previous possibility under consideration, along Providence Rd.

As someone who lived in Rochester, the birthplace of Wegmans, and soon to be resident of NC I am extremely interested in seeing a Weggies in the Charlotte area but this may be a premature assessment:

https://www.wegmans.com/about-us/***...ore-locations/

It may very well be that this purchase is too early to announce the location on the Big Board but I suppose we'll see :-)

Cheers,

Matt

It is still premature for them to announce a future projection on their website. Rezoning must still be approved. But industry sources speculate that Charlotte may be Wegmans next move as they expand further south from the Triangle region near Raleigh. Reportedly they were scouting this area a few years ago for possible future locations after Raleigh was established. And supermarket analyst Phil Lempert was predicting Wegmans in the Channel 9 report. Of course it is possible they could be planning a super Harris Teeter in their Charlotte hometown market. The Harris Teeter Marketplace in New Bern, NC is currently their largest store at 100,000 square feet, so such a super Teeter store could perhaps also be a possibility. We shall see.

And speaking of Harris Teeter, there still remains a void for their specialty prepared meals and soups, since their proprietary Knife and Fork vendor was abruptly dropped prior to last Thanksgiving. Apparently their contracted food prep vendor was unable to maintain their holiday dinner orders for Thanksgiving last year, and allegedly there were quality control issues heading into the holiday season. So the contract was abruptly cancelled and they are searching for a new vendor to produce their proprietary Harris Teeter recipes under their Knife and Fork in house banner. The prepared soups were very good and lower priced than the alternative Panera version, and the prepared dinners were also good. I hope they will soon return. I enjoyed their Broccoli Cheese soup, and their White Chicken Chili and Beef chili. As for the dinners, I miss the meat loaf, spaghetti meatballs, and fettacine alfredo.

And Wilmington's new Harris Teeter is like 94k square feet. No doubt that is Harris Teeters new model in emerging places

Food Lion is rapidly taking over IGA stores... For NC, at least, IGA was one of the last local-distribution grocery stores... Like Galaxy, BI-LO, and WinnDixie before it...

The problem with Food Lion: If you've seen one you've seen them all... Affluent location will have bigger variety, but from same brands...

Example: The breakfast sausage brands at IGA are/were usually processed and distributed within 400 miles of the store. This made the brand and product variety better, and usually better quality...
