I am trying to find where a certain race took place in Charlotte. My husbands grandfather was a sprint race car driver in the 1930s and 1940s. He was pretty famous in his day and raced all over the US. He qualifyed for the Indianapolis 500 at one point but the race was cancelled due to WW II. He died in a race 3 years later.

I am trying to find where he raced in Charlotte on October 20, 1945. According to a Greensboro newspaper article of that time the race took place at the Southern States Fair in Charlotte.

Does anyone know where the Southern States Fair may have taken place? Our family will be in NC in the spring (looking to move there) and would love to visit a place where my husband's grandfather raced.

Thanks!

Charlotte's Southern States Fairgrounds was located at the intersection of Sugar Creek Rd. and North Tryon St., and boasted a half-mile dirt track built in 1926. Regular events were held there until Charlotte Motor Speedway opened in 1960.

That site is now a shopping center.

superk, Thank you! It looks like we won't be seeing the race track itself, since it is now a shopping center, but we really appreciate your finding the picture for us. We are collecting pictures and articles of Pappy to make a scrapbook. He also raced in Greensboro but we have yet to find out where. Thanks again!
