I'm planning on visiting Charlotte during race week. Can somebody tell me the dates and recommend some "don't miss" race week activities?

600 Festival Association

In short, I'd advise you against saying anywhere close to the speedway unless you plan on being caught up in all of the mess from the races. A good base might be staying in Uptown, that way you are close to all the 600 festival events, be close to a ton of restaurants within walking distance and you can catch the CATS shuttle up to the race.

the Big one is Memorial Day Evening - runs at night - well into the night - 600 miles into the night....it's actually 2 weeks of stuff due to the All-Star festivities the week before...I'm sure there's a schedule posted somewhere...
-
Speed Street is a must do - It's all weekend of race weekend May 22-24th
from 11 am to midnight - they have drivers, sponsors, vendors, and concerts. It's done Uptown (the downtown area)...
-
Then of course there's all the race shops....
Plenty of fun for the weekend...

Don't forget nightmarish traffic anywhere around the speedway or Concord Mills.

I would recommend staying in Concord or Huntersville so you can tour the race shops in both locations
Joe Gibbs Racing - Visit the Race Shop in Huntersville, NC
Michael Waltrip Racing - RaceShops.com
Speed street is a blast with good music and you might want to bring a back pack due to all the freebies being handed out, but if not there plastic shopper bags with logos being handed out as well.

Ditto. Speed Street is great. Every day there are many good live bands and Nascar experiences. There are tons of free things given out by sponsors. Food Lion is the main sponsor normally, so you might see something on their site (I have not checked). I am not a big Nascar fan, but I love going to speed street.

I went to Micheal Waltrips race shop last year and it's great, you'll have fun. Don't let the parking lot scare you if it's full. There's lots of room inside. This is my first Race week also and I'm glad you started this thread. We've been to the Coke 600,7 years in a row. This is my first All Star Race and I can't wait to see Jarrett race the truck and all the fun stuff that happend between races.

You can also camp at several areas around the track. If you plan on staying at a hotel you'd better check availability NOW.

Reinman have you ever been to a race here before? Just Curious.

Are you camping or staying in a hotel? Finally are you going to both races?
