Union County School Board proposes new student realignment plan | WSOC-TV

Quote:
UNION COUNTY, N.C. - The Union County School Board passed a motion Tuesday night to begin developing a student realignment plan that aims to assign kids to their neighborhood school. This proposal would essentially reverse the controversial redistricting the school board approved in 2014.

The premise was neighborhood schools? According to what I heard from the meeting,it means go to the nearest school to your home. If you don't want to go to your nearest school, a board member (Mr. Sides) said you don't have to, you can stay where you are........ no questions asked.

There are many agendas in play here. At the end of the day, it's deja vu - the BOE ordering the UCPS staff to create a reassignment plan based on a demographer study. Now they have nice shiny new capacity numbers to play with and the directive is a bit different... put people at their closest school versus alleviate caps and push everyone out of the super 3 (Marvin. Cuthbertson, Weddington) - which we all know were built too close to each other.

and sure you can stay no questions asked if you want to wait in a huge car rider line every day for the rest of your child's education. I don't care how many times they look at, double buses to neighborhoods will not provide efficiency.

More feelings are going to be hurt.

Yawn. Here we go again.

So if you have a HS junior, and the closest school to your house is an elementary school, do they have to go there?

No, the student will likely attend the nearest high school.

this will create more nervousness in the realty market, some buyers waiting it out and make it harder for some to sell...

I was being sarcastic, but thanks for clarifying.

Let's get the CD band back together! Good to see some familiar "faces" to this discussion - been a while. =)

Many of us knew we'd be right back here and it would be a mistake for people to take this proposed new plan lightly - I'm willing to bet it's going to end up much much more than just "reversing the previous redistricting".

Keep your eye on the ball!
