We're building our first home and wanted to get people's opinions and insight into whether or not it's worth to hire an inspector. When should the house be inspected? Any recommendations for inspectors? Thanks.

Go to A S H I dot org, which is the American Society of Home Inspectors. Yes, even with building a home, an inspector is a vital part of the process.

We used Metrospec (in Charlotte), with both homes, and had a fabulous experience from beginning to end. They are very professional, detailed oriented and will answer any questions you might have about the process.

They will E-mail you color pictures of problem areas, and your entire report (s) will be available online (password protected) for your review, within a day of any inspections.

If you give them a call, tell Robyn that Sara recommended you. I don't get a referral fee, but she's a Jersey girl like myself and will get a kick out of you mentioning it!

Construction inspections are very important, I find some scary issues all the time. One of the big issues is where building codes do not address the use of enginered lumber except to say "follow the manufactures instructions".

Some houses are actually sagging from lack of proper beam support.
With over 60 people involved in building a house its easy to see where the problems can arise. Let me know if I can help.

An inspector is a MUST. The county inspectorss are typically overworked and will miss things sometimes. Having your own inspector gives you a set of eyes and an experienced voice when problems arise. My inspector (a retired general contractor) saved me thousands. Like Robretpd said some inspectors can even help you manage the consrtuction project, more money but less stress for you.

Rules to Remember

Make sure you get references.
Look for someone with home building experience.
Get your agreement in writing.

Best Wishes
