Construction inspections are very important, I find some scary issues all the time. One of the big issues is where building codes do not address the use of enginered lumber except to say "follow the manufactures instructions".

An inspector is a MUST. The county inspectorss are typically overworked and will miss things sometimes. Having your own inspector gives you a set of eyes and an experienced voice when problems arise. My inspector (a retired general contractor) saved me thousands. Like Robretpd said some inspectors can even help you manage the consrtuction project, more money but less stress for you.
