Can anyone recommend a company or individual in Huntersville for some basic lawncare at a good price? Not sure how long I will need it, so not looking for any long term contracts, just the basics for now.
Also curious, how is everyone's lawn doing? Mine is starting to kick in, I should fertalize and some other things, my neighbors long is great and right now I wish I knew more and could put in the effort to keep up.

Don't know anyone to recommend, but can tell you about our lawn. DH spread seed two weeks ago and it is coming up! We are seeing signs of life out in that dirt! Woo Hoo!!! The "old" lawn is darned ragged and we are keeping our fingers crossed that the seed will germinate well and fill in . . . I guess only time will tell!

I love this time of year!
Just aerated my yard today. Went in w/5 other people and it only cost me $15.
Seeded the bare spots. Cut the lawn. Mulched a little.....its all good!
Going to throw down some more lime/fertilizer in 2 weeks. Grass is getting a nice dark G-R-E-E-N..
Everyone who still hasn't patched those bare areas, get crackin!
If you look at the 15 day weather forecast for Charlotte, we're expecting to have at least 3 nice rains in the next 15 days....I'm thinking more and more everyday that Mother Nature will definitely cooperate w/all the "green thumbers" out there....

Okay, Jack, I am counting on the weather! DH was out working again today . . . been edging, spreading pine needles . . . we have high hopes for patching this disastrous mess and going very green in the coming weeks!!!

Just curious, what will you decide to do? Are you going the topsoil/seed/starter fertilizer route, or the "patchmaster from Scotts" route?

DH got a tiller and tore up the worst sections and re-seeded - so not quite the patchmaster route, LOL. I am the Patchmaster advocate!!! DH said - nah - do it right. I guess he was right b/c we are seeing grass coming up. So we went the tiller, topsoil, fertilizer, grass seed route.
Also had some drainage issues and are hoping to bypass the french drains we suspect should have been installed when this house was built (1987). With all this rain, we have been gauging run-off - and think DH may have engineered things so run-off will not accumulate in the section where it was puddling before. We shall see . . .
DH decided on pine needles, not the artificial mulch or bark or cedar. The upper area of our yard (at the road) - we spread pine needles out there and put in edging. Now we are trying to decide on some foundation shrubs of some type to go in that area . . . gets S facing sun so we have just not figured that out yet (burns up plants in the summer). Might post a thread asking for suggestions!
Whytewulf: you can get a hand spreader that is not expensive to throw out fertilizer. Or you can rent/buy the push type - we got one of those about 15 years ago. This way, it doesn't take long to fertilize the lawn - you can get it done pretty quickly on a Sat. morning.

How necessary do you think using a pre emergent is around here. Im wondering what the best option is at this point. Re-aerate and seed or pre-emerge and fertilize. Cant do both. My lawn is actually in decent shape, but does have some bare spots Id like to fill and I know the crab grass control will kill that plan.

A couple other questions, if someone checks this:
1. If you pay someone for your lawn work, how much do you pay and how often?
2. How often to you seem to need to mow your lawn
3. Are you doing anything special right now, like seeding or aerating?

Can't answer #1, never paid someone to do my landscaping
2. Once a week minimum if we have our normal amount of rain. I don't like letting the grass get out of control because its not good for it to take alot off..
3. Just aerated, lymed, and fertilized most of my lawn. Two days after aeration there a HUGE difference. Grass is a dark green. Patched some thin areas w/seed and starter fertilizer....
