I have had some excellent nights out in Charlotte. For example, last night, I met a friend and we go otn the light rail and stopped at South End for drinks and tapas, got back on the rail and went to NoDa which was jumping with activity. Had a couple of drinks there and continued on, by rail, to uptown where we bar hopped the evening, socialized, and had a wonderful night. Lots of activity and great places to go. Just wanted to say that there are great places uptown, i.e., performing arts, several museums, dancing, ball games, excellent bars, restaurants, movies and even the Music Factory. Charlotte is really an impressive sight to behold uptown at night with all the new structures. If you can't find things to do or places to meet people in Charlotte, you won't be satisfied anywhere. It might not be NYC, but you seriously can still have just as much fun.

My favorite post of all time! I was in Charlotte yesterday and Uptown was very lively, and this was between 2 and 4 PM in the afternoon, so I can imagine that it was jumping once it got dark!
We stayed in an Uptown hotel all last week, we’d never been to Charlotte and don’t know a soul there. But we had a great time, loved the city! I am sure there are exceptions, but everyone we met was nice to us no matter what race or socio-economic level, it was a very pleasant surprise. We were house hunting, so there’s a good chance we’ll relocate there within a year. We thought we were going to move to Raleigh-Durham, but we liked Charlotte much more.

Don't listen to the lies about rampant racism all over America that the race-baiting media is selling ...your experience is much more consistent with reality.

Actually the truth is somewhere in between IME.
It's possible I was just lucky for the 9 days we were in and all around Charlotte, but we didn't have a single bad exchange with anyone the entire time we were there. That included situations where we were the minority by a long shot.
After 25 years here, I can tell you it wouldn't be possible to be treated that consistently well by people from all walks of life in Chicago. Not a chance...
I do realize there are bad people everywhere, but the difference between Chicago and Charlotte was undeniably night and day. I have no reason whatsoever to promote Charlotte, don't know anyone there, and never been there before 12 days ago...
Racists are a minority, but still a very sizeable group it seems, and a small number are militantly racist...

I've never had an issue and I am often there at late night during week nights and weekend nights. It is possible to get into lots of trouble in downtown if one is looking, but, who does that? I believe that Charlotte is comparatively safe. Besides, there are lots of concealed carry permits around and that always deters crime. But still, I believe it is pretty safe. I certainly don't worry, nor do I make eye contact with precarious individuals. That is just street smarts anywhere. I don't usually even have trouble in places where I am supposed to find it either in the U.S. or overseas. Maybe they think I look like a badass or I look like a crazed maniac? There has got to be a reason.
I just want to add that I like Chicago and think that it is a friendly town (city). I have had exceptionally good experiences with friendliness and generosity there. No kidding.

The reason is that trouble isn't hiding around every corner like some would lead you to believe. It's really that simple.
Chicago has an enormously high murder count. It's not everywhere. It's in certain areas. There's not a murderer hiding around every corner ready to kill you. Same thing here.
Anything downtown is usually just simple stuff. There is the occasional stick-up but, there is an occasional stick-up in Ballantyne, too.
You might look like a crazed maniac but I don't think that has much to do with it.
