I think as in most places, if you stick to well marked hiking trails where the path has been cleared away, then you'll be good. If you go off path and have long grasses rubbing on your legs, then you're taking a chance.
I've only seen a couple ticks in the Charlotte area. Even if you're bit and fail to find it, there's still less than a 1/100 chance it carries lime disease around here. You'd be better off worrying about a car accident going to your hiking spot.
