Hello! My husband and I are considering relocating to Charlotte, and are looking for advice on where to live!
A little background: We are both in our mid-20's, and would be working uptown. We are looking to rent an apartment/townhouse or small house in a suburb outside of the city. We do have family in the Davidson area, but are looking for a little bit closer of a commute. Things we want:
-Safe community with a family feel
-Fun things to do on the weekends; Breweries, local restaurants, farmers markets, etc.
-Close proximity to parks/places to run and walk our dogs
-30 to 45 min (max) commute

Budget is around $1500-1700 per month. Thanks!!

Assuming you plan to see your family in Davidson, definitely Huntersville.

For a reasonable commute you probably wouldn't want to be north of exit 23/Gilead Rd. But something like the Villages of Rosedale might be a good fit - walkable to grocery stores and some restaurants and also connects to the greenway. Not sure you're timeline but looks like there is currently a SFH available (Laurel Tree Lane) at $1,700 (they also have townhomes in there but don't see any for rent at the moment but I only checked 1 site).

As far as I know Primal is the only brewery actually in Huntersville, but there are several more just over the border in Cornelius.

One thing you may not realize is that Charlotte basically is a giant suburb. Its not like older, northeastern and midwestern cities with large, older urban areas. It has a relatively small urban center surrounded by suburban style neighborhoods. look around the Southpark Mall area for a rental.

Definitely agree with the Huntersville options for proximity to Charlotte, but being close to your family. It is a nice suburban community, but traffic on I-77 can be rough heading into Uptown. A recent addition of an Express Lane provides a paid option to expedite that commute though. Express buses will be getting added soon as well and leverage these Express Lanes, but you leave the driving to somebody else! You'll find Huntersville is family friendly, and the better dining options will be in Davidson / Cornelius, or down in Charlotte.

The greatest concentration of breweries in the Charlotte area is in the corridor following the Blue Line light rail from the South End neighborhood up to the NoDa neighborhood. South Park might be a good option if you want proximity to those brewery, restaurant, and nightlife areas, while enjoying a slightly more suburban atmosphere and a reasonable commute to Uptown. However, that will be much further to Davidson and you may find it too much of a hike to visit family.
