Did anyone see on WBTV news this morning that CMPD is gonna start issuing citations at $160 a pop for anyone tossing a cigarette out the window.

IT IS ABOUT TIME!

I don't smoke and I am not against smoking...I am against littering. A cigarette out the car window has always been accepted and not thought of as littering. That has now changed effective April 22nd. It is about time!

I agree with this one, I'm a smoker and I always use the ashtray, that's what it's there for.

Sad that we have to enact a regulation to keep people from engaging in incredibly STUPID behavior!!!! People should just never do such things. Like you, 7 oh 4, I cannot understand throwing anything out a car window - yet, I see litter all along our highways. Who are the trashy people doing this? I wish they would charge $500 for anything tossed out of a vehicle. And points on licenses and mandatory days spent cleaning up the trash from medians and highways!!! NO EXCUSE for littering!!!!

They (WBTV) said that the fine would be $160 for a cigarette...and $370 for other litter. They are doing a litter bug crack down. Can't you just wait till you get home to throw something away?

Yeah I cant wait

Lets just add another 15 minutes to the slow response time of our police force when they could be assisting catching those who do home break ins.

I keep a bag in our car all the time to deposit anything that accumulates (water bottles, wet wipes, etc). Why this seems to be a foreign idea to some people baffles me!!! But the thing that really gets me is - do these people toss trash all over their own yards? Why would anyone think littering public property is acceptable behavior?

I am very pleased to hear about the $370 littering fine. Still wish it were $500, tho. Make it really really hurt!!!

Wonder if this is just a local ordinance thing or if it will be enforced by HP on all our highways? If it is HP enforcing it, then that won't take time away from CMPD. Hmmmm. ????? How do we find out who is going to enforce it and if it is just in the city - or for the whole county - or what . . .

They specifically mentioned CMPD.

I am sure the NC HP will be watching for litter bugs too.

I hope it applies to the whole state. What bothers me when I see this is not only the littering, but during the drought one badly tossed lit cigarette could have started a fire. That happened in Ft. Lauderdale some years back. It was a drought, someone tossed a lit cigarette out the window and the grass on the side of the road caught fire. It was fortunate that it wasn't a large area. In fact during "fire season" there they specifically mention throwing lit cigarettes out of your window.

I learned my lesson many, many, many years ago when I was driving and threw a cigarette out the window. Didn't find out until later it blew back in and burned a nice whole in my back seat. Nature's payback I guess.
