I read through a previous post without finding a very recent answer, but I'm curious to what consequences anyone has suffered recently (in 2012) from not buying a dog license? I saw one or two people say they received $50 citations and many people say they never paid anything without any consequence in the past. I'm a student here and not a resident, but received a post card after I got their rabies shots a few weeks ago. Seems like a waste of money to me if I'm only here for two semesters and I live outside of the city. Serious answers (with no rude ones) would be appreciated!
Well if your animal was picked up by animal control & had no ID tag then you wouldn't be contacted that it was in their possession. I think they give you 72 hours to collect your pet before its euthanized.
No consequences. Seven years here and still nothing. They call my husband from Texas once a year and try to scare him into paying. That's it. It's a complete waste of taxpayer money and needs to be cut.

When we had our cat vaccinated for rabies at the city shelter we had to show ID . When we failed to buy the license after a short time we got an official letter and one of the animal control officers had signed a warrant and a 50 buck fine had to be paid or face arrest. We paid up but now AVOID having any of our animals getting into the animal shelters data because we get our animals vaccinated someplace else.The free shots offered at the shelter are intended to be use to gather data on owners and get them on a billing list.
My dog got loose recently when I fell and broke my arm. (we had been out walking) After I fell, my dog wouldn't let anyone near me - he knew I was hurt and was protecting me. I was facecdown on the ground, unable to move. I gave my son's cellphone number to someone nearby, and she called him to come get our dog. Animal control showed up right as the ambulance was taking me away, and got my name & address and our dog's name. I was SO glad he was up-to-date on his rabies shot, and I had paid for the city license. Otherwise, I'd've had to deal with doggie jail on top of everything else.
I don't know the reasoning behind the license, and I did get his rabies shot at one of the free clinics, and just went ahead and paid for the license at the same time. It would be a good idea for the city to re-evaluate the necessity of a license. Most people I know don't get one for their pets.

Forgot to say, I don't think you need to pay if you're a visitor! A quick call to Animal Control should remove your name from their records, so they don't keep dogging you* for the fine.
What agency uses the money collected? Does it go to animal control or the local animal shelters? If so, then it is a good fee. Someone has to pay for that. Why not animal owners.
Where outside the city? If you live outside of Charlotte/Meck, then licensing is governed by the county of residence.
We live in Indian Trail. I bring our dog to Long Animal Hospital, which is in Charlotte. In 2008 he was given his rabies booster, and a few weeks later I received a similar postcard threatening all sorts of fines if we didn't send money for a license. Seem to remember it coming from a contracted organization, Pet Data.
Threw it in the garbage. Every 6 months ago they sent follow ups which got more challenging in their tone, threw them out also.
