I visited NC/SC a few weeks ago and really liked how the lakes are convenient to alot of towns around charlotte. I was particularly interested in the cornelius/huntersville area around Lake Norman and the Fort Mill area near Lake Wylie. I was just wondering which lake has more "going on" in terms of restaurants, bars, activitied etc... Also which lake is cleaner to swim/fish in? Overall which is the superior lake?

Tough call, as I like them both. Lake Norman wins for having more "going on" in the categories you listed. But Lake Wylie is where the Bass Masters Tournement is held every year, people love to fish there. I personally would live on Lake Wylie in a heartbeat - it is so peaceful and scenic you forget you are actually close to such a large metro area.

Cost of living will be much higher on Norman. SC has lower taxes.

Remember that parts of Wylie are in NC as well. I'd prefer Norman over Wylie because of the traffic-to-stuff to do ratio (is that a real one?). You'll sit in traffic for a loarge part of your life in both areas, but there is much more going on in Cornelius.

We live in Huntersville and have visited a number of places along Lake Norman, but have only been to Lake Wyle twice. We were just at lake Wyle (Fort Mill area) this past Saturday and the area we were in looked sort of "scrungy" compared to any area we have seen along Lake Norman. We looked at a boat tied to a dock at Wyle and their were cob webs on the Bow of the boat and the dock was pretty "scruffty" looking. The water around the boat looked pretty dirty also. Even if it were more expensive, we would choose to live on Lake Norman anyday, not Lake Wyle.....please remember, this is just our opinion!

When I first moved here, someone told me Lake Wylie is for the rednecks and lake normal is for the bankers. From what I have seen, there is some truth to that.

Lake Norman is so crowded on the water. I like being able to water ski without fearing my life!

Which is the superior lake? Wow!...loaded question. Yet, I really think is boils down to what one is looking for. Lake Wylie is a pond compared to the size of Lake Norman. If you are someone that is looking for more of a social scene (in regard to restaurants, bars) then Lake Norman wins Hands Down! Heck I can name on one finger what restaurant we have on the lake....T-Bones! (apparently a second restaurant is in the works...but they've been working on it for a couple of years now)?
Now if someone heard that Lake Norman is bankers..and Lake Wylie is rednecks....and then someone else saw an old dock with a boat that had cobwebs on it....that's fine by me....cause I surely don't want to be the one to Try and talk someone into seeing the beauty of Lake Wylie...cause if I do that...that will just be more of ya coming this way....and I kind of prefer it just the way it is!

From a vistor's perspective - who will be moving there, I've never been to Lake Norman, but I have been on Lake Wylie many times and love it.
I don't recall any trashy boats or houses - although I am sure there are certain areas that aren't as high end, but my memory is full of large beautiful houses on Lake Wylie. Granted my friend lives in Tega Cay which is nice area. We go to differnent sand bars and hang out and it has always been a lot of fun and social in my opinion.
Looking for pictures but don't have any here at work. My opinion and perception is Lake Wylie is very laid back and relaxing
