Everyone from the Philadelphia metro area knows that it's all in the bread (preferably Amorosa) when it comes to hoagies.

Are there places with a reasonable facsimile, or do you bring bread with you, when you go back & then freeze it & make your own?

I haven't found one yet. I will be going to Philly in a few weeks and have a shopping list going. People keep recommeding LaSpada in Cornelius. Not bad but they don't make a traditional hoagie... not to mention that where I lived in FL had a LaSpada so it's not a big deal for me. The Philly Soft Pretzel Factory in Mooresville is a nice piece of home.

Thanks! It was just a thought.....

I did a short-term job in Monmouth County a while back & ran into a Pathmark & picked one up. My local Pathmark makes a decent hoagie, with Amorosa. What I got in Monmouth County was disgusting.

When A&P took over Pathmark, they made my Pathmark use soft rolls...... when nobody would buy them they changed back.

I usually "make my own" starting w/the sub rolls from Lowe's Foods (Anthony & Sons).

Haven't found a roll that comes close to these yet...

Maybe someone has some Ideas?

I have lived in southern states for 16+ years and every time, every time, I have said the word 'hoagie' people either laugh or go 'huh?'.

Good luck on your quest.

Thanks, Jack, I kind of figured I'd have to hunt down a reasonable Italian bread, then make my own, or bring bread down, but it never hurts to ask.

No problem. You did the right thing by asking.....

I've asked many people and this is the closest I've found how to make a good italian sub/hoagie that works for me....

I know, I know........ I'm originally from Michigan. I had the same reaction, myself, when the family moved to South Jersey.

That being said, in my travels, I either get a horse laugh or find a horrifying facsimile. I think the most horrifying was in Califorina, where someone was selling baloney on lettuce with tomato on a hotdog roll, & calling it a hoagie!

Gotta get the language down first. They do not make hoagies in the south, they are called subs and sometimes you will hear them called heroes.
I had a guy ask me the other day uptown if they sold grinders in the area.
