There was a store we used to frequent in West Hartford called Ten Thousand Villages. It sold various ethnic products (Asian, African) and provides fair trade value to the artisans. Is there a similar store in Charlotte, and if anyone has been there, is the selection fairly extensive? I bought a pair of bookends in the CT store that were from the Philippines and would like to see if there are similar items.

Well, I would be interested in finding out about such a place, too, Bibit. The closest I could imagine here would be the World Market (as far is items) but I have never seen any policy from them as to "fair trade value" being provided to the artisans. I would think they are just like any other retailer - profit profit profit, LOL.

Actually, Ani, I googled it and there is one in Sharon Amity! Have been browsing their website and was just curious if someone local has been inside to browse.

I've been to the one in Raleigh as well as one in Alexandria, VA. I know the appeal of this store, so I can't wait to visit the one on Sharon Amity.

I love 10,000 Villages! I haven't been to the one on Sharon Amity yet...tomorrow perhaps!...but we used to have a traveling shop that came to our town before the holidays every year. It's wonderful stuff and is a wonderful idea. I've gotten so many nice things for our family, as well as gifts. Anyone know where on Sharon Amity?

There is a large World Market on South Blvd in Pineville. Dont know the name of the shopping area, but it has a B"B and Beyond, Sports Authority, Babies-r-us and a bunch of other mega stores. You may also check out Pier One imports. They have quite a bit of the type of decorations you mentioned.

OK, just got back from 10,000 Villages at Cotswold. Loved it! Got some gifts for my sister-in-law. They had more than the selection of our old traveling shop in PA. The man who was working there was very friendly and helpful, as well. Highly recommend it!
