I am coming to visit in 2 weeks looking at the Lake Norman area and a community setting. I will be retiring and needing to choose between here and Sarasota..I am single and schools do not matter, thanks for any advise!!
Some areas to check out include Birkdale Village, downtown Davidson (check out Kindred, so good!), Lake Norman State Park, Latta Plantation, et. Depending on weather, might be fun to rent a kayak and get on the lake!
Hmm, yeah it's hard for me to square how Sarasota is comparable to the towns in north Mecklenburg. At first I thought the OP might be interested in being near marinas, but Sarasota isn't even on Tampa bay.
Florida has no income tax... NC does... (although NC does not tax Social Security).
Personally I don't care for Florida for year round living though. Hard to give unbiased advice.
But for the OP, this area does have winters. We get some mix of sleet/snow/freezing rain each year and nights go below freezing fairly often in January and February.
My info might be kind of dated, because I was in the Charlotte area 8 years ago and only for a short time. But in addition to what CLT4 sugggested, you might also look at the Lake Wylie area (that's to the southwest of Charlotte). Also, there's Tega Cay and Fort Mill, just across the state line in SC. I'm not sure what the income tax situation is, but I do know that property taxes tend to be somewhat lower than Mecklenburg and other NC counties.
I'm sort of in the same boat as you, hitting retirement age. I'm in frozen NY state and am also looking to relocate for political & economic reasons. I like Florida but I want a change of seasons. Good luck with your decision!
I lived in Charlotte for 8 years (and I'm now retired). I'd never consider retiring there.
