Hello, I have been teaching in SC with an emotional disabilities certificate K-12, I have job offers in NC, but I do not know how everything will transfer to NC DPI. Has anybody been in this situation? Will I be hired and then be required to take additional praxis tests later? How does an out of state emotional disability teaching certificate transfer to NC? How was your experience with this? Eventually I want to be multi-categorical/ cross categorial and that takes only one praxis test to add on to my license.

I am sure that if you want to teach in the emotional disability arena, you will easily find a job. Whether you have to take additional tests depends on your state and I believe that N.C. and S.C. have a reciprocal agreement. I moved from Florida and there was the agreement with Florida. My license was valid and I didn't have to take any classes or tests, etc. with my previous experience. I was certified in special ed., history, geography, elementary, and as a behavioral specialist.

Thank you so much, I was just thinking to be multi categorical or cross categorical. I have more than 3 years teaching, so if I'm hired for a special education position without multi categorical or cross categorical, just emotional disabilities, I'm not sure if I can work in that position until I take more tests or I can work in that position and will just be given time to take the tests.

If you are limited to being certified only in emotional disabilities, you should first check school that have openings and pick one that seems to suit your desires. If you don't, you unfortunately will likely be assigned to the school that is least desired that has an opening, and that could be a nightmare. Good luck.
