There's a dog tied up on a leash right in front of Bloom off of WT Harris. I thought someone just left him outside while they shopped, but I spent a good while in Bloom and when I came out he was still there.. I'm nervous that someone abandoned him there =[ It looks like some sort of collie/australian shepherd sorta mix, white and light brown, so sweet looking. I'm going to check if he's still there in about an hour.. my dog lover's heart can't leave him there, what should I do????
I would tell the people that work there about it so they can keep an eye on it. You don't know that the person whose dog it is just isn't taking a long time. (I personally can easily kill an hour in the grocery store...)
Absolutely unacceptable for an owner to tie his dog up while shopping! (Even if that was the excuse). Hope he found a good home and whomever abandoned him gets what's coming.

I HATE when people do this. I would never, ever do that to my dog, this presents so many cruel and tragic possibilities for the poor animal that are far too easily avoidable.

Just curious, what should they do with their dog when they need to go shopping? Most, if not all, grocery stores deny admittance to all but service dogs. Should they lock them in a box under the stairs until they get back with the dog food?? Maybe know of some affordable boarding kennels they could use when they need to shop?
Maybe we need a law to force shopping centers to open doggy day care centers with certified doggy "moms" to take care of the dogs in a safe, nurturing environment. Segregated, of course, by size and breed so that there are no nasty boo-boos when their owners come back.
This is an interesting thread to me. I have a dog who goes everywhere with me. When I lived in a more walkable neighborhood (Midwood), it wasn't uncommon for me to take him for a walk and tie him up while I ducked into a store or two. I always made sure he was out of the way of traffic (road and pedestrian) and in the shade. I never saw it as animal cruelty, as has been suggested. Personally, I think leaving him at home alone in a 3' x 4' box is worse than taking him for a walk and tying him up for a few. If anyone has visited more dog-friendly cities like Denver, Portland, etc., there are dogs everywhere. Some places allow the dogs in the store, others do not. Its not uncommon to see dogs tied up outside those stroes that do not allow pets inside.
On the surface, I have no problem with this situation, provided the dog was tied in an acceptable area, for an acceptable length of time, and it wasn't overwhelmingly hot outside. If done responsibly, I think taking your dog out with you is a perfectly acceptable idea.
