You used to be able to get it at any classy restaurant. I haven't heard much about Baked Alaska since restaurants have infused so many "hip" desserts into their menu. I have become partial to creme broulette.

It's pretty easy to make - get a Sara Lee Pound Cake - slice off a bit of the top to make it smooth. Buy a half gallon of ice cream- the kind in the box. Cut off the box around it so it keeps it's rectangular shape. Put it on top of the pound cake. Whip up some meringue (just sugar and egg whites). Frost the ice cream and pound cake all over with the meringue. Pop under the broiler till it starts to brown. Slice and serve with strawberries or (my favorite) some hot fudge. Yum!

OK...this is absolutely wierd-o twilight zone stuff...

I had never heard of this dessert until this afternoon when I stumbled upon this thread. Then I get home today and turn on the Discovery Channel to watch a little Cash Cab. One of the questions: Name the dessert that's made of sponge cake, whipped cream or ice cream, and lemon meringue that shares it's name with a US state. I was baffled...had no clue. Rhode Island? Vermont? California something-or-other? What is it???!!! Baked Alaska. I almost fell out of my chair (and yes, the contestant did know the answer). Where have I been all these years? I need to try this stuff!

When my wife and I went to Trio (Charlotte NC Restaurants, Best Restaurants in Charlotte NC) they had a Baked Alaska dessert. Wasn't exactly authentic but it was still good. You might want to check them out!
