Thomas Street Tavern is NOT a dive bar. The prices are decent, it does have a great atmosphere but it is far from a "dive." Some others were good suggestions though.
I agree it's not a dive, but probably the type of place the OP is looking for which are hard to find in Charlotte (the non-chain/nonfranchise non-AppleBees non-VillageTavern type. Nothing against those places but I think the OP wanted something with maybe a more "white collar" feel as opposed to Polo Shirts and Dockers.). Tavern on the Tracks is okay too but of course it is designed for transplants. The Penguin has a small bar. Elizabeth Billiard's is decent, but it is smoke-heavy, even for smokers. There is no ventilation or fans in there. Also the Locker Room on S. Tryon though the neighborhood isn't too good.
Oh yes, Mac's is quite fantastic. Great barbecue and a great atmosphere. I love that place! The decor and staff give it the atmosphere of a biker bar, but it always feels like the patrons are the total opposite from bikers! haha
And if we're gonna start talking about chill places, not necessarily dive, I'd throw in Tyber Creek in Southend.
Will also throw in Vinnie's Raw Bar, Rusty Rudder, and Midtown at the Lake. The Beer Olympics should be coming up soon at Midtown, and that's always entertaining...lol
Also Bailey's on Hwy 51 near Pineville if you're looking for pro tables and good wings. More of a sports bar/pool lounge though.
For those who have mentioned Puckett's, I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in...
By far the dive-iest dive bar I think I've ever been to. We're talkin a new level of dive. I don't think they serve food, and I wouldn't eat there if they did. Don't get me wrong, I had a good time there and I'd go back.....ran into some very nice locals. Of course they might have been mean, I couldn't understand a word out of a few folks mouths. The place is dimly lit, doesn't serve shots, does have a pool table and has some live music (the reason I went there in the first place). One last attempt at explaining the extent of dive we're talking here......a few of the guys were double-fisting it, meaning beer in one hand, spit cup in another. Yeah, it's a dive, but worth checking out at least once.
