Anybody have some good recommendations for dive bars in and around Charlotte? I am mostly looking for a relaxed, casual atmosphere with cheap drinks and cheap food. Pool tables would be nice. Any ideas?

Sammy's in Pineville. No food, but free pool with the best tables in Charlotte. He's off of 521 across from the treatment plant.
The Graduate off Hwy 51.
Sayeeds in Cornelius.
Jakes at the Lake in Cornelius.
Yellow Rose in Touchstone.
Smokey Joes on Monroe Rd. behind Independence Arena.
Thomas Street Tavern off Central Ave.

Thomas Street Tavern is NOT a dive bar. The prices are decent, it does have a great atmosphere but it is far from a "dive." Some others were good suggestions though.

Well I wouldn't really consider dive, but you're gonna find the same type of chill people in a great atmosphere. It's definitely a hippy place and he wasn't looking for strictly dive as stated in his second sentence.

My first thought when I read your post was Elizabeth Billards (off Pecan near Central Ave, behind the Sherwin Williams store). I decided to see if the address was online and found this article Charlotte's Best Dive Bars - Associated Content about dive bars in Charlotte. Enjoy!

Oooh! Sorry, forgot to mention the Comet Grill on Park Rd. in Dilworth. They have food (Elizabeth Billards does not) and it is pretty good bar food. Also, they have live music several nights a week. I grew up in Michigan, home of the best dive bars in the world, so I too pay attention to this kind of thing.

And I'll add the old Mellow Mushroom in NoDa--can't remember the name. Not really dive either but definitely chill.

The Gold Club. It's not a dive bar but you do get in free with a light rail pass. So it's cheap. Cheap = dive, right?

The Gold Club is a trashy strip club that probably should be torn down - not a dive bar.
