Those are nice rates, especially if one is actually working close to a 40 hour week.
Well. Seems it would be tough to replace those jobs here, if there are say - 1500 people in IT looking for similar jobs. Not a good thing.
Correct, however if you're a contractor, you know that at any moment your contractor can be "ended" without zero notice, so you (theoretically) should always have something in your back pocket or at least on the back burner.

I understand that. My work is basically contract. I know what I can count on w/ retainers . . . and flat rate projects . . . and then put $$ aside. You gotta do that when you are out on your own . . .

Right. I tell people that contracting can be very rewarding both professionally and financially, you just have to do it right (and you're strategy is exactly how to do it right).
When contract jobs dry up, the recruiters staffing for these contract jobs are hurting as well. Twice in the past 2 months, a recruiter has called me asking if I was aware of any potential openings for contract positions in my company, conceivably so they can call on these people and push their candidates. The slowdown in both banks are hurting not only the employees (and their families) but also those whose jobs are dependent on companies hiring. I feel bad for everyone all around. Contract jobs with Wachovia for finance pseudo-IT people start at $45/hr net to the candidate, or about $80/hr to the recruiter....not a bad chunk of change.
