What does 'World-Class' mean anyway? Bigger or better. Because one doesn't neccissarily mean the other. If you read all these threads showing that people are moving here from all over the country, it kinda makes you think... geese... it might be better. The word "World" has the connotation of meaning bigger, but is that neccissarily the case?
Does the infrastructure of a city make it worthy of the title 'World-Class'? Not in my opinion.
We have almost everything that the larger cities have, but on a smaller scale and with much nicer people and lots of flowers and clean streets.
If it's the people that live in it that make it so than my opinion is... Hey, yeah, that's us!
Apparently it isn't a big deal. It is good enough for 70,000 newcomers a year, it is good enough for me. What does world class get you? It certainly doesn't put food on your table or money in your pocket. Just give me the restaurants with my favorite dishes, some cool bars and dance venues, a place to launch my boat, and some friendly people and I will be happy. Besides, not being a world class city means that it is less likely that we will be the victims of a terrorist strike.
Please all of you remember that it's the Charlotte Observer telling the story. They blow up a weather story. This sort of thing is right up their alley. The Lord Mayor was probably asked if Charlotte was a world class city and he answered. Don't forget it was hosted by the British firms here who are more than likely trying to up their status around the world. Give the bloke a break.
I have to agree that the Charlotte Observer (nothing more than a liberal rag) blows stuff out of proportion, but the google and yahoo headers are something else entirely.
Think about it, the leaders of this city are TRYING to make it bigger to bring in more tax necessity. Flooding this city with people is exactly how they will justify their train fiasco, and new baseball stadium, and The Greenway Easement project, and whatever else they dream up so they can artificially pump up land value, and make a pretty buck. Then their all gonna pick up and move to historical Gastonia and start screwing that place up.
If you ask me it's a black eye for the local natives.

Huh?? What do you mean by "artificially pump up land value " Seems to me you have a very complex economic viewpoint about how a city builds a new stadium, Greenway, train system so that "They" (the gromes of the Swiss government I guess) can now screw the people of Gastonia.
For those like me that are city planning challenged could you be so kind as to help us out on your theory? Looking forward to your response.
TIA
