I flew down to Charlotte on Tuesday and started seriously looking at condos in the Dillworth, NoDa, and downtown area. I was a shocked at what you can buy condo-wise for 225K down there, and downright floored at the cheap property taxes.

I was reading the thread on the Californians-to-Charlotte people, and wanted to know how everyone from North Jersey/NYC/Long Island is adjusting.

My realtor told me her brother was in Jersey City, and he is fleeing as well. You know it's bad when you live in a 1000 sf loft, and your property taxes are approaching 13k/year...total insanity . I love it here, but enough is enough!

Oh, and by the way, for those of you that left NJ, Gov. Corzine is trying to cap the yearly property tax increase at just 4%. What a swell guy! LOL

Anyways, I would like some feedback on experiences, what to expect, what not to expect, and everything in between! I am 29 and single, so schools aren't a concern.

Thanks in advance!

Default Also from Hoboken NJ

I also live in Hoboken and am considering a move to Charlotte. I have heard good things about Myers Park, Dilworth, South Park and Davidson areas. It will be tough to match Hoboken but a heck of a lot cheaper.

Steelers fan? You go over to Texas Arizona to watch the games? I'm a lowly Jets fan, so I hide in my apartment every Sunday!

I love Hoboken as well, but it just doesn't make sense for me to live here anymore. I really think all these rich kids who live off of mommy and daddy kind of ruined this place.

When is your timeline to get out of here?

Big Steelers fan. I grew up in Pittsburgh and moved to Hoboken in 03. Sundays at Texas Arizona in the fall is the thing I will miss most about the Boken. That and having about 50 bars in walking distance all in 1 square mile. I like Hoboken, but it's time for a change. You can get so much more for your money in Charlotte.

My plan is to move down there in Jan 07. I need to tie up a few things I have going on with work in 06.

When are you planning on moving down?

I completely agree with having all the bars within walking distance from anywhere in town.

My plan is to have my business partner buy my half out over at the Tea Building, and let him keep it for our long term tenants, and quietly start to finish up my job. Ideally I want to be out of here between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but my lease is up Jan 31 so I can stay a little longer if I have to.

Do you have a job lined up? I think I am going to wait until I get down there to start looking.

You guys better hurry, if moving down here. Costs of living are increasing every yr in the CLT/Mecklenberg Cnty. Propr taxes incr. every year, as well as many other things. Traffic is crazy. There are good things to say about this place, but for us, we are moving to Columbus, OH area.

From the perspective of someone from the NE US regions, yes prices are currently less. But as more and more move down here, the locals in govt are increasing costs b/c they know they can raise them and still appear low-ball. NC has the highest tax rates in the southeast. But whatever you, enjoy being here and make the best.

Oh, get used to driving to get a loaf of bread. Bars? here in the bible belt. Yeah, they have some. But not 50 w/in a 1 mile.

Best wishes!

Well Charlotte has been said to be a bad place for single people. It is more family oriented than anything. There are some areas like NODA where there is a bourgoise bohemia vibe however its different. For people that lived here a long time those prices are steep for NYers who are coming from a place where a million dollars buys you a studio. Of course you will find it cheap. If you want the Hoboken waterfront vibe I recomend moving to Charleston SC. There they have lively clubs off all kinds on Market street. If your used to being close to the ocean like you are in HOboken then you will feel weird living in a landlocked city. So it depends on what your expectations are. You will find the people here don't party hard-core.

Thanks for the advice. I am STILL in Jersey, STILL trying to find a job in Charlotte that pays over 40K. The first of the year, my department was notified that wil will be dissolved in March so the pressure is on.

If anyone knows of any good marketing recruiters, please let me know, because te CareerBuilders and the Monsters of the world just aren't doing it.

I'm a Steelers fan in NYC that spent many a lost Sunday afternoons at texas Arizona. Transplanted Pittsburgher, of course. Now I am looking into moving to Huntersville next year like a lot of northerners that are paying way too much for housing.
