Hi, I'm planning on renovating my kitchen with new cabinets and countertop. So far, I've looked at Lowes and Home Depot. Can anyone recommend (or not recommend) anywhere else? Good or bad experiences are welcome.

I'm trying to stay within my budget (no more than $2,500) and going to install myself to save on installations costs which are around $1,200 for a 10X10 kitchen like mine.

Woah. From what I've seen and heard $2500 won't get you very far at HD or Lowes. We redid our office with kitchen cabinets from Ikea and are happy with how it came out (even though I have yet to finish it). So I would strongly advise you to look there, especially if you plan to DIY.

Thrilled with Carolina Cabinet Refacing.
Also used them for great pricing on granite (from local yard) and appliances.
They are very flexible and I have retained one of their woodworkers for some other projects on the side.
Cannot recommend enough.

That bad news is that $2500 is going to be tough.

I second the IKEA idea. They are opening here soon - January according to another post. You can download a program on their website that lets you design your kitchen on your computer. Pretty cool! Good luck! IKEA | IKEA kitchen planning tool (http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_US/rooms_ideas/kitchen/download1.html - broken link)

I was pleasantly surprised when I went to a co-workers house and she showed me her new kitchen cabinets, from Ikea and I am not a huge fan of the store at all.

We spent less than that at Lowes for their stock unfinished oak cabinets. We will be painting them and buying nice hardware, I think they will look great. Gave us more money to spend on counters!
