I live in SC and I recently bought my first boat which will 'reside in NC (Lake Norman). Do I title / register the boat in NC/SC? Are there there tax advantages to one state over the other?

Honestly, I'd register it in SC and forget about it unless someone gives you any hassle about it. I'd imagine SC taxes will be lower.

Todd Jones, I imagine you're wanting to know how to register a boat in your name when its in someone else's name. You'll need the title if available, and a notarized bill of sale. With those its as simple as going to where you need to register it and its in your name.

Regardless of title state, you'll still be libel for payment of the annual property tax in NC on the boat.

Under NC law, tangible personal property located at a seasonal or temporary dwelling within NC, shall be taxable at the location of the seasonal or temporary dwelling.
