Currently, I live in South Florida where I don't get the opportunity to experience much of a winter. I am very interested in a possible move to the Charlotte area and would like to know what is the heating preference of most that live there. I know that electric heating can sometimes take a while to heat up your house, especially if the house if large. I have relatives that live in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, etc. and they all have gas heat for their homes. I know that it does not get nearly as cold in Charlotte as it does in the midwest, but I was wondering how effective electric heating in comparison to gas heating. To those of you that have gas heating, if would be appreciated if you can explain on average what the expense is to have gas heating. Any input given is greatly appreciated!
We have gas heating on a 3300 sq ft home with two floors. The gas heater warms up the house the minute you turn it on. However, get ready to pay big bucks for it. We keep the thermostat at around 69 during the day at 66 at night on both floors, and on the winter months, we pay around $130. During summer it is barely $30, but our cooking stove and water heater also run on gas. Welcome to Charlotte and I hope you have a job waiting for you.
I have had electric and gas in the area and much prefer gas.
It is just warmer, IMHO, but a bit more expensive.
2500 sf house, downstairs 67, upstairs 65 (thermostats are never that accurate anyway), high bill usually $225.
BUT we have gas fireplaces and run them frequently - so cozy.
Sometimes all day on Saturday and most nights.
Both furnaces are near-new 90% efficiency units.
Gas water heater, and my kids take hot baths every day.
I am sure the high bill would drop to under $150, maybe less, if we did not use the fireplaces or put the kids in the shower vs the bath.

Your house must be very well insulated. Me and my boyfriend live in a small starter home and it costs us around $100 a month when its really cold out. We keep our thermostat set at 70.
We have 3 floors, 2500 sq foot and we haven't had a bill go over $100 this winter, and we keep the setting around 70. We also have a gas stove but electric for the water heater. Each floor has a separate thermostat and that is a huge help.
Our house is 1600 square feet and our gas bill was $100 last month. We were leaving it set at 69 degrees, but have since dropped to 66 degrees so that it doesn't run as much.
3300 sq ft and our last bill which I just paid was $227. Heat on 65 during the day and 70 at night. Normally in normal months its $28..Come on spring!!!!!

We may live in the same development. I have a similar place but we keep our temp at 74. Our gas bill for January was $128. I should mention we're in a townhome.

Our house is barely two years old. The units are brand new. I guess that would help keeping the cost down. Our highest bill was $230 in January of last year. But we had family over from FL so we kept the thermostat higher and there was more cooking and way more hot water consumption. I am looking forward to the spring and the lower utility bills. It is cool enough to not keep the a/c on, and warm enough to have the heater off.
