How is the LYNX rail taking shape? Does it seem to be a popular thing now? It really looks like the plans for it are fabulous.. I will be in Charlotte within the next month and would just like to know if the rail will be able to get me out of downtown for a bit to enjoy other things in Charlotte such as shopping?? What are major stops?
So far only one "leg" of the rail has been built. This is the "blue" line and it goes south of the city along South Blvd.
There are a couple neat stops in an area called "South End" which might be fun to visit. Other then that, I would not suggest getting off the train at other stops since there is not much there and some are in questionable areas.
The Lynx will not take you to SouthPark Mall, which is the best mall in the Charlotte area. In the other hand, you might want to take it Uptown bound and get off in City Center, enjoy some of the local bars and have fun. Other than than the light rail is only good for commuters to get to and from work.
They are getting some more Federal money from the Porkulus NonStimulus Bill, to help beld the Northeast UNCC line but it's still several years out...unfortunately, they haven't come up w/ enough money to work on the Commuter line up the Lake Norman communities...to me that's the most important line to get built...after that, the street car going from the Gateway Center on the east side of Uptown and the Transit Center on the West side of Uptown would be the next most important piece...hopefully, eventually they can get the whole ambitious system built...I can tell you ridership has been outstanding on the Blue line, and it has spurred a lot great dense development in Southend...hopefully the economy turns soon b/c I'd like to see the Greenhawk development as well as the Scaleybark developmens and the Bonded Distribution redevelopment all get going too.
You can get to Carolina Place Mall. Get off at the last stop (485) then catch the No. 58 shuttle. Most of the stops are fine to get off at. Maybe not late at night. But there isn't much else except around South End. If you're into independent music stores, there's Manifest Discs at Archdale.

I hope they use some of that money to improve safety issuses. I took the Lynx last night for the 1st time, ran the whole length of it & it's a lawsuit waiting to happen. There is no fencing running along it. Anyone can just step out onto the tracks or even drive a car onto it. Pretty dangerous.
From what I heard, if they ever extend the line north, it will not extend into Iredell Cty. The county doesn't want it.
