Since my wife and I are new to the area, it would really helpful to get your feedback on what you believe to be the best hospital (doesn’t matter what area in Charlotte) to have a new born baby. The ideal situation for us is a private room, and such. Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Pointman, first of all congrats and all the best wishes for a smooth delivery! My wife and I had a great experience at CMC-Pineville. She had a private room, and the nursing staff was very attentive and caring. We had twins, so they were obviously even higher-maintenance than having one, and we couldn't have been more pleased.Hope that helps and best of luck!

Here's a second for uptown Presby. My daughter and I were both born there...

Gaston Memorial's Birthplace is incredible. We drove from SouthPark to go there, and have no regrets.

I agree with Presby Uptown. Also CMC Uptown. Both have the best NICU's in the area (should you need it). I had a baby at each. Personally preferred Presby, but CMC was great too. You can go on a few tours and decide what you like best.

My two daughters where born at CMC Charlotte and everything was perfect.
My brother chose Preby downtown for his daughters (most recent was Monday at noon) and they like that hospital. IMHO you cannot go wrong with either.

Presby is a little more luxurious (if you will), but as others have posted, you can't go wrong with either. Presby-Huntersville is amazing, and so is CMC-Pineville. If you are a high risk pregnancy, then by all means go to CMC-Main!

There are a lot of factors that should be taken into consideration.

Is this the first baby? If not, was there a C-section previously and is she interested in trying for a VBAC?

How much or how little medical intervention does your wife wish?

Does she have other medical issues to be taken into consideration?

Does she want an OB or a midwife?

Do you want the baby in a nursery post-delivery or at wife's side at all times?

Proximity to home or work should be a big factor too. Would hate to end up delivering in an unfamiliar place or someplace your doctor doesn't have rights because she went into labor suddenly and couldn't get to your choice of hospital.

The 2007, "Method of Delivery" records, by hospital were recently published:

Total C-section rate for 2007
NC Total 32.2%
Lake Norman 37.5%
Presby-Huntersville 32.9%

CMC-Pineville 32.5%
CMC-Main 31.4% (lower than the state average)
Presby- Main 38% (18% higher than the state average!!)

CMC-University 38.4% (19% higher than the state average!!)
Presby-Matthews 34% (higher than the state average)
CMC-Union County 25.8% (20% lower than the state average.)

Best chance of a vaginal first birth is at
CMC-Union County 87.8% of all births are vaginal, much higher than the
state average.
CMC-Main 82.7%
CMC-Pineville 81.9%

Worst chance of a vaginal first birth is at
Presby-Main 77.3% of all births are vaginal, much lower than the state
average.
CMC-University 78%

Best chance of a VBAC is at
CMC-Main 2.5%
CMC-Pineville 1.6%
CMC-University 1.5%

Most chance of a repeat C-section is at
Lake Norman 16.6% of all births
CMC-University 14.9% of all births
Presby-Main 14.2% of all births

Least chance of a repeat C-section is at
CMC-Main-11.7%
CMC-Pineville- 12.7%
CMC-Union Co. 12.9%
Presby-Huntersville 12.9%

The more intervention, the likely a C-section will be the end result. Obviously, a C-section is major abdominal surgery and should not be considered elective surgery. Recovery time is longer and additional risks.

Great book if this is first baby, What to Expect When You're Expecting.

Congratulations and good luck!

In looking at these stats, you have to consider why Presby uptown and CMC main have higher C-section rates than these other hospitals. They get MANY more of the high risk pregnancies than any of the other hospitals, and therefore will have many more csections..
