Havent seen anyone mention Surf City/Topsail Island (gulp!) We're scheduled to go there on a family reunion/vacation in July. Any opinions? Also, anybody have any recommendations for best driving directions from Charlotte?

We go to Isle of Palms several times during the summer. It is very quiet and a "hidden gem". Lots of locals- not much to do (but I haven't gone looking). We usually drive there to get to the beach for lunch stay all afternoon, dinner in Charleston, and home by 8!

Hilton Head. You can find accomodations in varying prices/sizes. The Hilton Head Beach and Tennis resort on the north end is older but still nice and would be great for small kids - they have a large beach front pool with a baby pool. There's a restaurant, an oceanfront bar/grill, and a little store all within the resort. Very reasonable prices.
