What will I bring? A highly skilled professional who will replace someone who left for a job in a different state. Yep, I finally got a new job, and it is in Charlotte.

We won't bring kids, but we will bring 3 long hair cats, so we'll support the local vet, groomer, and pet stores. Once we sell our home in WS, which is smaller than our home back in MA, we'll be ready to buy one of those great homes on the Charlotte (or suburbs) market.

Once the house sells, my DH will bring his talents with computers, audio, and ink with him.

I will start donating extra "things" to Goodwill tomorrow, but that will help Winston, not Charlotte; they are hurting this year with donations that are down.

I will also look to delve into the history of the Charlotte area, as discussed in other posts on this forum. Where are the best libraries in town?

Also will be looking to support local fabric shops, other quilters and sewing friends, and a few true Southerners to teach us the nuances of Charlotte vs Forsyth County.

Bad part? Leaving Winston-Salem, losing out on some great outdoor beach music concerts, sitting out on our native born Southern friends porch, looking over his acres of beautiful green farmland, talking and letting the breeze flow over and around us. Leaving the fantastic church I finally found.

Good part? Finding a good job in a very tough economy, leaving a few months of unemployment behind, and starting to support the nation's economy again by buying more than necessary food, utilities, and fuel.

RAGDOLL: Looking forward to your moving here. Please do not hesitate to let us know if there are ways we can help you all get settled. It is just as hard to move to another part of a state as it is to move 1000 miles, LOL!! Packing up and relocating is hard work but I suspect you will quickly find your way around here and make a smooth transition. Good luck as you get ready for the big move!

Thanks, that South Carolina border is so close to where we will be looking in South Charlotte. Right now we are about 30 miles south of the Virginia border at Mount Airy where they hold some great Beach Music concerts.

We have loved Winston-Salem, with the Blue Ridge Mountains, Pilot Mountain, Sauratown Mountains, but I noticed there were still some mountains around the Lake Wiley area, so that makes me happy. I'll miss the southern charm of this small city, but I saw a similar charm in Mint Hill, so I know I'll find it near Charlotte too.

The one thing I'm very happy about in this whole change? I'll still be in North Carolina. Hooray!

Hm... not sure how to take this post, seems a little condescending, but I'll assume it is with good intentions!

Financially, husband and I are bringing the same salary he was making in Chicago (he now works from home). So, all the income, fewer expenses, so plenty of money to spend at area businesses!

I am a grad student at UNCC. It seems they're really trying to get out-of-state students (offering good assistantships and such)... this seems a little weird to me, but since they're trying to become a more well-recognized research university, I suppose I've helped them by packing up and moving here to attend their school. My academic record is really good, and it makes them look good, attract better candidates, etc. I TA statistics courses, and get paid very little, I like to think I'm doing my share to help local kids do better.

Real-estate-wise, we DID NOT do what Johne482 described in the original post. We bought a pretty small, rundown house in Kannapolis. We've put a lot of money/elbow-grease into remodeling it, all DIY work. We don't expect to make a huge profit, but if we break even we are happy. Hopefully this little town thrives, and hopefully our work is appreciated by whoever lives here next.

Now that school is out, hubby & I are going to volunteer at the Raptor Center. We shop at local-owned businesses like the little pet food store, farmers market, sandwich shop.

But, I must say, we have felt welcomed by the locals in Kannapolis from day one. No one here has questioned our intentions, expected us to conform to any standard, or been anything other than friendly and helpful! Whatever transplant vs. local conflict that others seem to experience (and I've experienced on these boards) has been non-existent here.

"For example, I am acutely aware that we lack the large museums that many other similar sized cities have. I think the expansion and collections at the Mint are wonderful and I am so pleased to see this happen (and to support it). But for me, this is just not enough. And we do have other museums that are very worthy and well done and I am proud they are here. I would like to see the arts supported as much as the hospitals are, for example."

Interesting that you mention museums. My son did an internship at BOA last summer and when I visited him we strolled over to the Museum of the New South. Wow! What an incredible experience THAT was. It’s one thing to read about history, but to see actual news reports from the 50’s and 60’s about segregation/integration was an amazing experience for him; and for me. It was a wonderful thing to share a snapshot of time that I had experienced.

Now, he’s moving to Charlotte in June and I’m trying to convince him to stay, but he wants to move back to NY after training at BOA. Do you know why he wants to move back to NY? Because he has season tickets to the JETS! He’s been going to Jet games since he was 6 years old. I keep trying to tell him that you cannot plan your life around a football team, but so far, he won’t listen. I’m hoping the quality of life in Charlotte will lure him, permanently. I'm kinda done with Long Island.

Those JETS tickets are a powerful lure, tho, LOL!!! Yes, we have some fine museums - we just need bigger and more. It takes a lot of money to build - but acquiring collections is also a huge revenue drain! We need someone to endow museums here w/ some big bucks.

I am glad you took time to check out Charlotte. It may be that when your son is older, he may be more interested in moving here. It would be hard to lure most young people away from NYC. I have noticed when people get married, start having (or thinking about) kids - that is when Charlotte often starts looking like a good alternative.

For the lower cost of living in CLT he could always bank the savings and fly up to games. I moved here in 2004 and I'm probably not as much a die hard as your son but I continue to own Cleveland Browns season tickets (since early 90s) and still get up to about 3-4 home games and possibly 1-2 away games. There are many football fans of Steelers, Pats that have adopted Panthers as a second team to get their football fix. I seem to get offered some good seats to Panthers games each season as well. It's pretty easy to make money on Ebay selling unused season tickets so your son could still keep them.

If I didn't have a way to watch my Rangers hockey games I wouldn't have come down here in the first place and that's the God's honest truth. I wouldn't have even considered it. Another friend of mine said that if he didn't have a method to watch his Giants games he may not have come down here either. It kills me that this is the first year in a long while that I haven't been to Madison Square Garden for a hockey game. Guys like us are very much tied into our favorite sports teams, I can definitely relate to his logic.

I will bring myself -- a full-time headache specialist to Charlotte. The only other one is extremely part-time and out side of that, 45 minutes away. I am also the only fellowship-trained headache specialist in Charlotte as of July
