Hi Everybody,

We are trying to narrow down where we will purchase our home. I have looked on the sites that list test scores, etc. I know from experience, there is a lot more than scores that make up a great school. Would anyone be so kind as to tell me their opinions on the following school systems? Maybe you had children that went to them. The areas of interest are: Indian Trail, Waxhaw, Kannapolis, and Concord.

Indian Trail Elementary and Waxhaw Elementary are both in Union County Public Schools.

Kannapolis is a city within Kannapolis City School district and Concord is a city within Cabarrus County Schools district. There are several elementary schools within each of those two districts.

The schools in the area surrounding Charlotte have experienced a lot of growth and change in the past five or so years. Look for opinions from people who CURRENTLY have a student in the schools you are looking into.

I have three children, two of whom are now finishing college. My last student's (a high school freshman) school experience is so much different than the first two, even within the same school district. Things are changing so quickly here that the information would be unreliable unless it is coming from a student CURRENTLY in the schools.

That being said, I think there is a lot to be learned from plundering around on the school websites, reading their newsletters, looking at the photos and success stories posted. For Union County Schools, there is a good link to all the local schools here: UCPS Schools Directory (http://www.ucps.k12.nc.us/schools/schools.php - broken link)

This map may help you figure out which schools to look at:

Thanks for helping. We are going to look at our most favorite homes this weekend. I will have more concrete info after that. I will update the thread and maybe that will help a bit. Sorry if I was so vague.

As someone that works in the schools, I can give you an honest assessment. Knowing what I know, I would have no problem sending my child to any of the schools located in the areas you had mentioned in western Union County (Waxhaw and Indian Trail). In those areas, I would rate the schools as the following: Marvin and Weddington clusters as Great ( I would assume that Cuthbertson will follow their standards) and Sun Valley and Parkwood clusters as good (plenty good enough for your child to get a solid education). If you move into the Indian Trail area be careful; due to redistricting, several developments near Sun Valley Schools are set to go to Monroe. You don't want to do that. Make sure you do your homework before committing.

Overall, I'd say UCPS is great school system and a great choice for a parent. Additionally I think most people really love western Union County. Personally I find it as a great place to call home. Good luck!

My son graduated from Parkwood and he did fine and is currently in college. I have a friend whose son went to Weddington and he didn't do well at all. He got involved in drugs and dropped out. There are drugs in all the schools but Weddington is really bad and they try to hide it. I think if you have a good student they will excel no matter which school you choose.

Isthis true? about Weddington? I live right by there. Lots of kids in my neighborhood go there and they seem like great kids?
