Can I use this thread to pay a compliment to a different locally-owned restaurant? A friend and I have recently discovered Tavern on Park, located near Park Terrace (Woodlawn and Park...but over where Jason's Deli is). It occupies the spot that used to be Bertucci's. We've eaten there a couple times now, for lunch and dinner, and both times our food was really fabulous.

For lunch, I had their tuna-fish sandwich. It was flavorful and dense without being dry (but also wasn't mushy or too wet). The tuna had a good clean flavor...nothing metallic-tasting. It was served on tasted bread with lettuce, I believe, and came with french fries. The sandwich was so hefty that I wound up taking half of it home for dinner. Price was modest: $7.50. Not bad. My friend had the black-bean burger and enjoyed it every bit as much. I believe hers was priced the same.

This weekend, we went back for dinner to celebrate my birthday. We split the calamari -- good, although not the best I've ever had. I ordered the shrimp and grits. The grits were creamy and cheesy, and the dish came with 6 or 7 (I didn't count, so I'm relying on my memory here) large shrimp (whole, peeled, but tail on). It was all topped with a "tasso" gravy -- whatever that is! -- that had some small pieces of ham in it. Really delicious! My friend ordered the crawfish pasta. I didn't sample her dish, but she said it was excellent. Each of our entrees was around $16 and the calamari was, I think, about $9.

Service was excellent and attentive.

I know I'm going to want to go back to sample more items off their menu. It's a limited menu, but that's not necessarily a bad thing in my opinion. Still plenty of options, from salads to pizzas to sandwiches and burgers, to steak and seafood dishes.

My wife, who is a vegetarian can always find something to eat and has always had a wide selection of "off the menu" or "specials" to choose from. She said the Salmon Cakes were the best she has ever had!

The service never misses a beat and is always first rate!

We go to the location in Toringdon near Earthfare in Ballantyne but they have 2 locations.

In this economic times, I feel it is necessary that we celebrate and support a locally owned, non chain restaurant.
