I've been in Charlotte for about a year, never converted to a NC license (don't have a car, haven't been driving, probably won't drive anytime soon but want to maintain a drivers license anyway.) After 8 years, my NY State license is about to expire. So I have to do 2 things: renew my license PLUS convert to a NC license. First Question: for both things, do I have to pass a vision test plus a written test?

I last renewed the license on my birthday 8 yrs ago in NY State. Well, my birthday is later this week. Second Question concerns deadlines: is the deadline to renew the license exactly on my birthday? or do I have till the end of the month or 30 days or longer to renew it? (Again, I won't be driving so won't get ticketed for driving without a license!) And is the deadline the same timeframe for converting to a NC license? Confused!!

Anyone know the answer to these questions? or can direct me how to find the answers? Trying to avoid being on Phone Hold Hell for an hour with the DMV! Thanks.

Oh I know this one! Your license has to be less than a year expired, so you're good. I took a vision test, some test on signs and a written test. Did not have to take driving test. It was easy.

Actually, to get a NC license you will need to take the sign & vision test, and the written test. The examiner can also, at their discretion, require you to take the driving test as well. Most of the time they don't require this if you have a valid unexpired license from another state. My guess is if you let the NY license expire, then you will have to apply to NC as a new driver instead of a transfer and that does mean you have to take the driving test.

It's against state law to live here and hold a license from another state for driving purposes. It's probably only important if you get stopped or are involved in an accident. If it was me, I would go get the NC license. If you don't want to wait in long lines, I recommend going to a DMV office in one of the surrounding towns.

The last time I was in a drivers license office, a lady from NY was going wild about the state not accepting her passport as a means of ID..Got to hear my favorite.."Back in NY they..."

Please be sure you read what forms of ID are required and what meet the criteria. I think you need two forms, cannot remember.

I can assure you the folks at DMV will not budge from what the NC instructions say, and they probably get a chuckle out of hearing about how it was in NY.

You will need your actual, physical, paper, social security CARD. Knowing the number is not enough. Having the number on a tax return is not enough. To get a NC drivers license you will need the actual card, probably for the first and only time in your life!

VA should refund you the balance when you turn in your plates. We did it by mail for NY and I would think it would be the same everywhere.

I find it funny that people are worried about taking a vision test to get a driver's license.
