I love the history of Charlotte and North Carolina as a whole! I am wondering if anyone here has ever found anything historical or interesting, whether on their own property or out in the wilderness? I am new to NC and I am loving discovering all the history of Charlotte. I just did the Reedy Creek trail that leads to the Rock House Ruins and I've been to the Museum of Charlotte and Latta Plantation. I just can't get enough! So what have you found? Did you use a metal detector?
Fabulous looking articles. Over what period of time did it take you to amass? And how much time do you devote to this hobby?
I only posted a portion of my finds... most of what I find is not very interesting to look at for the average person. I found my first artifact just a few years ago, and hit the ground running. I used to go out a few times a month to hunt (before my daughter was born), usually for 4 or 5 hours at time. I figure I find one 'complete' tool for about every 100 pieces I find... maybe one complete tool for every 8-10 hours of hunting.
Which doesn't sound like much of a pay off, really! But here's the thing; when you find the right spot (the honey hole, if you will), you'll rack up a bunch of finds... then you spend the next 10 months trying to find the next hot spot, maybe finding very little or nothing for weeks and weeks.
Finding a complete tool is a high like no other though. The thrill of spotting a beauty tucked into the clay gets my blood pumping! There's just something about finding and holding something that hasn't been touched in maybe 10,000 years and was used for who-knows-what. Maybe the spear you found was used to skin an eastern buffalo, or to slay a giant sloth... the speculation is half the fun.
If you want to give it a shot sometime, send me a DM. I'll get you addicted
Have you found any Indian trail marker trees? Here's a pic from a tree I found a couple of years ago when I was living in northern NJ:
I would love to find some of these down here... I am assuming Indian Trail, NC would be a good start based on the name. I understand that Indian trail markers can be found up and down the east coast.

thanks,
I've never seen any old trail markers around here.
The first problem with finding NA trail markers on trees is finding a tree >300 years old. Which is a serious challenge in the south. All but the steepest slopes and most remote areas have been logged several times in the last 200 years. The areas with old trees (cypress swamps, mountainsides) probably wouldn't have been on a major trail...
If you have any luck locating some, give me a heads up!
