What are the best animal shelters to adopt a puppy from? As in, which seem to have a lot of available puppies? I really want something 8 weeks or younger. I have been looking at puppies for a few days using petfinder (among a few other websites). Every time I find a puppy I want, it has already been adopted. I am willing to drive an hour or two if necessary

Although it breaks my heart to see adult dogs in there, I am not comfortable adopting an adult dog. I was bitten by a dog as a child, and am very apprehensive towards adult dogs. Any dog I have been around since they were a puppy, I am fine with. Irrational fear, I know, but I also know that because of my fear, I can not give an adult dog what they deserve because there will always be a hesitation on my part.

Or, does anyone know someone who has puppies available?
I would be completely happy with a mixed breed I just prefer not to have a slobbery dog (i.e. no St. Bernards, Basset Hounds or even labs).

I was bitten as a child too, but dogs are my best friends now. Don't know of locations, but suggest a Golden Retriever. Every dog slobbers, it's just to what degree. Mine only slobbers after he has been outside, walking, playing and comes in for a drink, he'll slobber around the bowl a bit.

Good luck with search

The Mecklenburg county animal shelter has a ton of puppies to choose from.

Animal Care + Control (http://www.charmeck.org/Departments/Animal+Control/Home.htm - broken link)

there are also a lot of rescue groups out there for specific breeds.

Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder

just put in your zip code and you will find the latest availabilities in your area.

I applaud your willingness to adopt a rescue pet. They are the best!!

I am a volunteer at Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control. We are having an adoption event next Saturday (7-11) at South Park Mall's Center Court from 10 am to 4 pm. We usually bring lots of puppies to our South Park events. I hope to see you there!
