Union County and surrounding counties are big horse country. The two races that I hear mentioned most that are fairly close to Charlotte are the one in Mineral Springs, NC and one in Camden, South Carolina. Probably some of the "horsey set" can better answer that question. Found this link that seems to include links to a lot of area races...
OK, the locals will kill me for giving out this tip, but instead of trying to get into Mineral Springs down Providence Rd to Waxhaw, then 75 towards Mineral Springs, consider 84 in Weddington to Potter Rd (near Wesley Chapel ES). Potter Rd takes you straight into Mineral Springs.
Although all tailgating spaces are sold out, General Admission is still available (as stated above - get them for a discount at Harris Teeter, or McAllisters). General Admission allows you admission to the infield (which is HUGE, with lakes and acres and acres for kids to run and play and still not bother anybody).
Pack a picnic lunch (coolers are allowed, but some things are not, such as umbrellas, tents - check the site for more: queenscup.org ) Plan on arriving early. Gates open at 10am and the races begin around noon. Lots to see and do besides racing, and there's a party afterward that everyone is invited to with live music and food!
We'be been PSL holders since the course opened and have a great time every year, rain or shine. It's a great way to spend a beautiful day outside with good friends and good food.
